Bag Containing $3,000 in Cash Reportedly Stolen from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at D.C. Restaurant
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was the victim of a theft Sunday night while dining at a downtown Washington, D.C., restaurant, she confirmed Monday.
Speaking at the White House Easter Egg Roll, Noem acknowledged the incident, noting that the matter remains unresolved.
According to a law enforcement source, Secret Service agents—who provide security for Noem—reviewed surveillance footage from the Capital Burger restaurant. The video showed an unidentified White male wearing a medical mask stealing Noem’s bag and exiting the premises.
The stolen bag contained Noem’s driver’s license, prescription medication, apartment keys, passport, Department of Homeland Security access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and approximately $3,000 in cash.
The Secret Service has launched an investigation and is working to track any potential use of Noem’s financial instruments.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the secretary had withdrawn the funds to treat her visiting family—including her children and grandchildren—to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts.
Law enforcement experts are raising alarms over potential security lapses after a thief was able to approach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and steal her belongings during a dinner outing in Washington, D.C.
“This is a security breach with serious implications,” said Jonathan Wackrow, a CNN law enforcement analyst and former Secret Service agent. “It warrants immediate and thorough review by the Secret Service, DHS, and other law enforcement agencies.”
Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on The Source, Wackrow emphasized that if needed, the Secret Service may have to reevaluate its protocols for handling security at private events.

He also noted that Secretary Noem remains at elevated risk for targeted threats from both foreign and domestic actors, adding, “Her public profile alone makes her a symbolic and strategic target.”
